Food

Marti said she was hungry when she came up with the idea for this show, and this was the result.  From our experience gathering songs to fit the food theme, we discovered that food appears to be a rare topic for songs compared to other more common themes like hard times, transportation, and relationships.  For several old standards such as "Watermelon On The Vine" and "Skillet Good and Greasy" we played more than one version because of the interesting comparisons.  We hope you enjoyed the show, and if not, it at least inspired you to have a good meal...

30 March 2008
Cowboy Singing

For our partially preempted show, we decided to play songs of singing cowboys, some of whom were real cowboys.  Hope you enjoyed.
  • Aunt Hattie Dalton "Old Red Rooster Party" Introduction (1994)
  • Walk In Jerusalem Just Like John (1941) / Golden Gate Quartet / Golden Years / FD Music

Carl T. Sprague was one of the first singers to record cowboy songs.  His 1925 recording of “When The Work’s All Done This Fall” is a classic.  He recorded the following song a year later.

  • Following The Cowtrail (1926) / Carl T. Sprague / Cowtrails, Longhorns and Tight Saddles / Bear Family

We revisited the next song a little later because it is very similar to Arthur Miles earlier version that went by the name "Lonely Cowboy"…

  • Cowboy's Home Sweet Home / Jimmie Davis / When I Was A Cowboy Vol 2 / Yazoo
  • Jesse James / Harry McClintock / When I Was A Cowboy Vol 2 / Yazoo
The following two-sided recording from Arthur Miles may be the earliest recording of “overtone singing” which today seems to be associated with the country of Tuva (between Russia and Mongolia).  Apparently Arthur Miles, whom we know nothing about, developed this style independently.
  • Lonely Cowboy - Part 1 and Part 2 (c.1928) / Arthur Miles / When I Was A Cowboy Vol 1 / Yazoo
A fellow named Curley Fletcher wrote “Strawberry Roan” and later wrote “Ridge Running Roan” based on “Strawberry Roan” after so many other artists recorded versions of the original.  We played versions of both…
  • The Strawberry Roan (1930) / Paul Hamblin / When I Was A Cowboy Vol 2 / Yazoo
  • Ridge Running Roan (1999) / Skip Gorman / A Cowboy's Wild Song To His Herd / Rounder
  • Cigareets, Whuskey and Wild, Wild Women (1947) / Sons Of The Pioneers / All Time Great Singing Cowboys / Primo
  • Cowpoke (1951) / Rex Allen / All Time Great Singing Cowboys / Primo
  • I'm Hittin' The Trail (1938) / Montana Slim (Wilf Carter) / All Time Great Singing Cowboys / Primo
  • The Roving Gambler / Elton Britt / All Time Great Singing Cowboys / Primo
  • I'd Rather Have A Pony Than A Girl / Buddy Williams "The Yodelling Jackaroo" / Old Faithful:  Songs From The Saddle / Jasmine
  • My Pinto Pony & I / June Holms "The Yodelling Cowgirl" / Old Faithful:  Songs From The Saddle / Jasmine […an Australian singer]
  • Rock Me To Sleep In My Saddle (1946) / Roy Rogers / Old Faithful:  Songs From The Saddle / Jasmine
  • Ridin' Along Singing A Song (c.1938) / Hank Snow / Old Faithful:  Songs From The Saddle / Jasmine
  • Wagon Wheels / Kenny Roberts / A Cowboy's Life Is Good Enough For Me / Jasmine
  • Trailrider's Moon / Yodeling Slim Clark / A Cowboy's Life Is Good Enough For Me / Jasmine

16 March 2008
Home & Family

It was good to be back after so many weeks of sports preemptions.

The home and family theme has been popular for a long time, especially in the early half of the 20th century, so we had plenty of material for this show.  In fact, we had enough to do another show without repeating anything, but the songs below made the cut.

  • Aunt Hattie Dalton "Old Red Rooster Party" Introduction (1994)
  • Lord, I Am Tired And I Want To Go Home (c.1949) / Golden Gate Quartet / Complete Recorded Works Volume 5 / Document

Bill Bolick, the last surviving member of The Blue Sky Boys, passed away 14 March 2008 at the age of 90 in his hometown of Hickory, North Carolina.  We paid tribute to Bill Bolick and his brother, Earl (who passed away in 1998) by playing a trio of their songs covering a range of their style, including the haunting and beautiful harmonies for which they were best remembered.

  • Are You From Dixie? (1939) / Blue Sky Boys (Bill & Earl Bolick) / O Brothers! / Living Era
  • Whispering Hope (1949) / Blue Sky Boys (Bill & Earl Bolick) / Farm & Fun Time Favorites Volume Two / Copper Creek
  • If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again (1976) / Blue Sky Boys (Bill & Earl Bolick) / Mountain Journey - Stars Of Old Time Music / Rounder

Our “Home On The Range” set…

  • Home On The Range (1934) / Sons Of The Pioneers / Classic Cowboy Songs / Varese Sarabande
  • Home (Answer To "Home On The Range") (1937) / Fred Kirby / The Original "Atomic Power" / Cattle
  • There's Nobody Home On The Range Anymore (1999) / Rex Allen and Don Edwards / A Pair To Draw To / Garrett-Duetz

We have had a request for this song pending for a while.  It fit this show, so we played it…

  • Please Pass The Biscuits (1957) / Gene Sullivan / Classic Country - Crazy Country Hits / Time Life
  • My Little Old Home Down In New Orleans (1928) / Jimmie Rodgers / The Early Years / Rounder
  • I'm My Own Grandpa (1948) / Lonzo And Oscar with the Winston County Pea Pickers / Classic Country - Crazy Country Hits / Time Life

While not roots of country, many of us remember this bit of family humor from our youth…

Brothers, Sisters, and Willie's Birthday

For our sports-shortened show (women's hockey), we heard a tantalizing cross-section of brother and sister duets (and sometimes trios from larger families).  Sibling harmony has significantly influenced music over the decades, and there is enough material out there that we may do another whole show on the topic in the future.  Of course Charlie and Bill Monroe were one of the best known brother duos in the 1930s, and Jim's mother, Willie, saw them perform live when she was around ten years old. Since today was Willie's birthday, we had her tell the story of seeing Charlie and Bill to celebrate.

Today was my mother Willie's eighty-second birthday.  Willie was one of nine siblings in a poor rural single parent household (her father died when she was nine months old), but she had the great fortune to see Charlie and Bill Monroe perform in Midland, NC, (the closest "town") around 1936.  We celebrated Willie's birthday by letting her describe her experience...

30 December 2007 (we are keeping this last playlist from 2007 here until we can figure out how to put it in the right place)
Western, String Bands, Trains, Coal, and Truck Stops

This was our final Red Rooster Party for 2007.  We thank everyone for tuning in over the past couple of years.  We look forward to 2008 and bringing you even more interesting and influential music from America’s past.

DJ Johnny Time Warp paid us another visit and did a set of songs about truck stops, most of which were new to us.  We thank him and wish him well on the WHUS airwaves.

We also explored a set of train songs, one of the favorite song subjects from the early-to-mid 20th century.  And of course we finished with Auld Lang Syne in an very interesting version from a radio broadcast by Gene Autry from 1949.

Thanks for listening!
